IN near perfect racing conditions, the Scottish Sprint Racing season got under way at Linlithgow Loch on Saturday.

There was an encouraging turnout of under 10 and under 12 paddlers taking part in their first regatta and the older paddlers enjoyed the racing with a number of close finishes.

The regatta was organised by Linlithgow Kayak Racing on behalf of the Scottish Canoe Association and is the first of four regattas that make up the Scottish Sprint League.

Kayak and Canoe Sprint racing are both Olympic sports and the younger paddlers have their eye on the 2012 games and beyond.

A number of local paddlers did well with Sean Redmond taking 1st in the under 14s and Lewis Fletcher and Craig Holden taking 1st and 2nd in the under 16 category. Other local paddlers who took part were Alison Fletcher, Ryan Jamison, Gavin Fraser, Amy Redmond, Barbra Hogan, Euan Eason, Rhonwen Smith, Neil Fraser and Thomas Sneddon.

The organisers would like to thank all who took part and helped on the day, along with the staff at Low Port Centre for their assistance.

Linlithgow Kayak Racing meet at the Low Port Centre on a Monday night during the season and details can be found at www.linlithgowkayakracing.org.uk
